A funky, funky Shakedown for anyone continuing their Saturday night into Sunday morning. Giants Stadium 7/9/89.
From the middle of 1993 until the middle of 1994, I lived at home with my parents after graduating from college. I was thankful to have a roof over my head and the love and support of my family while I struggled to find a “real” job. More crucial to me at the time though was my lack of a social life. I just finished the best four years of my life at Virginia Tech and was now 600 miles away from the friends I had made. Needless to say, I spent a lot of Friday and Saturday nights at home.
One of the highlights every weekend came at 11:00pm on Fridays. The local public radio station would play the Grateful Dead Hour. It was the only time each week I could listen to soundboard material from my favorite band. This was before people like you and me used the internet. I would make sure to turn on the radio just a wee bit early so I wouldn’t miss a note. I have fond memories of the local DJ introducing the show each week with the words, “The Grateful Dead are next.”
While I was watching this version of Shakedown Street, the memories of those weekends, the Grateful Dead Hour, and the introduction all flooded my brain. I figure I should serve up the Dead each Friday night in the same time slot for any of you who might be in a position similar to me in 1993.
